I also thought from the picture that the wings glowed--they don't. Initially, I didn't know if it was on. The button is so tiny it is difficult to tell what position it is in. When I took off the plate and checked the battery connection, I could see the button better. I pushed it into the on position, replaced the plate (pretty easy--four tiny screws), and put it in the sunlight. That night, the ball glowed, and the light was reflected on the wings of the fairy. After the second day in the sunlight, the ball glowed brightly enough that it formed a pattern on the plants around it (due to the crackle in the ball's surface). It is definitely not a light that will illuminate a pathway, but if you have a magical spirit, like fairies, and want a little enchantment in your yard, it's a lot of fun.
